Coconino High School Students Recognized for Achievements in New Financial Literacy Program

May 25, 2012

Alliance Bank Sponsors Innovative Financial Skills Program

(FLAGSTAFF) - Sixty Coconino High School students were honored at a special ceremony this week to celebrate their successful completion of a new and innovative Alliance Bank Financial Scholars Program, the first of its kind in Arizona. The program is the result of a community education alliance with Alliance Bank of Arizona, the Flagstaff Unified School District, and EverFi, an innovative education technology company.

The program is an innovative design using an interactive online platform to teach critical financial skills in a fun format using high definition video, diagrams and avatars. Curriculum includes topics ranging from budgeting and saving to understanding credit scores, 'own versus lease' decisions and background on the stock exchange and Federal Reserve System. The honored students were members of the classroom of Mr. Jonathan Edwards, Coconino High School teacher of economics.

Dignitaries attending the ceremony included Stacy Zanzucchi, Coconino High School Principal; Jim Lundy, CEO, Alliance Bank of Arizona; Sherri Slayton, Senior Vice President and Northern Region Manager, Alliance Bank of Arizona; Jerry Nabours, City of Flagstaff Mayor-elect; Barbara Hickman, FUSD Superintendent; Chris Bavasi, FUSD School Board Member and representatives from the Office of Governor Jan K. Brewer and the Arizona Bankers Association.

"We are delighted to have been able to introduce this special program that brings critical financial life skills and education to these students", said Sherri Slayton, Alliance Bank Senior Vice President. "It is also especially gratifying to see how alliances of business, innovative technology and schools working together can assist our schools in providing this important practical education."
